Why That Empty Space on Top of Your Wardrobe Feels… Spooky

Posted on Jan 5, 2026 in Rants & Rambles

Ever noticed how some people say an empty space on top of your wardrobe is a perfect spot for a ghost to sit?

Yeah, I know, it sounds ridiculous — especially if your room is tidy, organized, and perfectly kemas. But stick with me.

Back in the day, our parents and grandparents were guilty of one thing: FOMO… on stuff. They bought everything they could get their hands on, and suddenly, every shelf, every corner, every surface — yes, even the top of the wardrobe — was overflowing. Sometimes so much that the poor wardrobe looked like it might collapse under the weight. And then came the stories: “Don’t leave that space empty, ghosts might sit there.”

Classic.

Fast forward to now: we actually know how to organize our stuff. We have storage rooms, bins, colorful labels, and systems. The top of the wardrobe? Often left empty, intentionally.

But some of these old-school ideas still linger in the cultural subconscious. Empty = mysterious = “maybe something scary lives there.”

Psychologically, it makes sense too. Our brains are wired to notice patterns and potential threats. Empty, dark, high spaces trigger that alert mode. Mix it with cultural stories passed down through generations, and voila — suddenly, a clean, empty wardrobe top feels spooky.

Takeaway? It’s totally fine to leave that space empty. You don’t need to pile random junk just to avoid imaginary residents.

Tidy, organized, and intentional spaces aren’t just safe — they’re freeing. So, let the wardrobe top breathe.

Just my thoughts after saw a TikTok video, a dancing but not the comments tho, full of ‘kenapa atas almari tu biar kosong macam tu’ hahaha
